Description in English below: Street Museum European Museom of the Year 2002The old Sofiankatu in the heart of Helsinki is a cosy open-air museum, which presents street pavements and street furniture from the late 18th century to the 1930s. The Street Museum was specially commended in the European Museum of the Year Award 2002 competition. The Street Museum presents the history of street building and furniture in Helsinki. Situated in Sofiankatu, the Street Museum enables you to move from a stretch of early 19th century dark, unfurnished street to a late 19th century gas-lit street and finally to a familiar looking street from the 1930s. The makers of the Street Museum have sought to create a streetscape typical of each period. The streetlights have been placed so that the increasing illuminating power is clearly visible. Visitors to the Street Museum encounter the technical departments of the City of Helsinki: the history of the gasworks, the waterworks, public works department and electricity works. The Museum's exhibits are predominantly from the turn of the last century since the Museum collections contain no early 19th century street furniture. The 20th century is represented primarily by objects that have now fallen into disuse. The streetlamps, telephone box and mailbox are reproductions of original models in museum collections. Katumuseo palkittiin erityismaininnalla Vuoden eurooppalainen museo 2002 -kilpailussa. Katuja pitkin pimeästä valoon Katumuseo esittelee helsinkiläisen katurakentamisen ja kadunkalusteiden historiaa. Sofiankadulla sijaitseva katumuseo on jaksotettu niin, että voit siirtyä 1800-luvun alun pimeästä ja kalustamattomasta katumaisemasta kaasuvaloin valaistulle 1800-luvun lopun katuosuudelle ja viimeiseksi jo tutun tuntuiselle 1930-luvun kadunpätkälle. Katumuseon tekijät ovat halunneet luoda kullekin ajalle tyypillisen katumaiseman. Valaisimet on sijoiteltu niin, että valaisutehon kasvu on helposti havaittavissa. Katumuseossa kävijä kohtaa Helsingin kaupungin teknisten virastojen, kaasulaitoksen, vesilaitoksen, rakennusviraston ja sähkölaitoksen historiaa. Museon esineistö painottuu 1800—1900-luvun vaihteen tienoille, sillä 1800-luvun alun kadunkalusteita ei ole säilynyt museoiden kokoelmissa. 1900-luvulta on valittu etupäässä sellaisia esineitä, jotka ovat jääneet pois käytöstä. Valaisimet, puhelinkioski ja postilaatikko ovat kopioita museoihin tallennetuista alkuperäisistä malleista.
