Sathamangalam R. Srinivasa Varadhan, né le 2 janvier 1940 à Chennai en Inde, est un probabiliste américain d'origine indienne.

[] Études et carrière universitaire

Il étudie à l'Université de Madras où il obtient une licence en 1959 puis un doctorat à l'Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) en 1963 sous la direction de Calyampudi R. Rao[1]. Depuis 1963, il travaille au Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences de la New York University, où il est actuellement professeur (2007).

Varadhan est connu pour ses travaux avec Daniel W. Stroock sur les processus de diffusion, pour lesquels il a reçut le Prix Steele[2] de l'American Mathematical Society en 1996, et pour ses travaux sur la théorie des grandes déviations avec Monroe Donsker, pour lesquels il a reçu le Prix Abel[3] le 22 mars 2007 décerné par l'Académie norvégienne des sciences et des lettres[2],[4].

Varadhan est membre de la National Academy of Sciences des États-Unis.
